Educating the Educator Training
- On April 14, 2016
Cara-Friend, as part of LGBTQI+ Awareness Week 2016, are delivering an evening of training for professionals and volunteers who work with young people, particularly those in schools and youth clubs. The session, entitled ‘Educating the Educators’ will be delivered in the Belfast LGBTQI+ Centre, 9-13 Waring Street, on Thursday May 19th from 6.00pm-8.30pm. The session’s aim is to provide an overview of issues faced by LGBTQI+ young people, and how to respond appropriately and sensitively.
We will cover issues such as dealing with homophobic and transphobic bullying; how best to talk about LGBTQI+ issues in RSE, basic terminology and problems around identifying as LGBTQI+, and the specific mental health needs of LGBTQI+ young people. We will also provide a question and answers session so that attendees can bring up specific scenarios that they need advice or help with. There will also be a section of the workshop dedicated to raising awareness around transgender issues, and what best practice is in terms of accommodating young people who do not identify with the gender assigned them at birth.
Tea, coffee and a light bite will be provided for those attending the workshop.
